A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU

by Ken Mahal, NSC President
Originally published on  December  8, 2005 - reprinted with permission

It has been an exciting year and I hope it passes as just that, exciting. At our advanced time in most of our lives it seems not having indigestion makes it a pretty good day so let us not get heated up over the Santa Claus and a Merry Christmas issue which has survived several thousand years. This will be our first year of not doing much for Christmas other than taking good care of ourselves and staying home for a change. I remember in Minnesota many years it was warm putting up the Xmas decorations but 20 degrees below zero when we took them down. So folks we do have some things to be thankful for out here in this dusty desert. And travel has become such a challenge that one wonders why so many of us leave Las Vegas during the holidays. I look forward to finding out how it feels to stay home for a change.

Speaking of seniors and gift giving, I read the Abbey column the other day that was all about what one might buy seniors for Christmas. Have you ever thought about how hard that is to tell some one? My wife told our family in Germany she liked Poinsettias. Well what would you say? So I have been thinking about that and some of the things I donít want or need like ties, shirts or shorts. The same goes for candy and the likes so what can we want that makes sense? Well how about a book, a magazine subscription, a game, or even money. Now why would it be so hard to tell someone that money would be fine when my wife for as many years as I can remember has given money to the kids, daughters-in-laws and grandchildren? I know it may seem impersonal but think about it, giving money lets the recipient buy what they want or need like; even using that money to pay for a medical prescription. I canít think of anyone who would say give me money for the medicine but if we get the money it would be OK to pay for the medicine wouldnít it? Maybe we should print something out that could be given to our kids that would make it easier to just say, ďmoney would be a nice giftĒ.

BUY GOLD, SELL GOLD, HOLD GOLD OR JUST IGNORE GOLD
If you have ever looked at gold as an investment it would take more patience than most would have. Anyway if you havenít noticed the price of gold has finally made it to the $500.00 per ounce price range and now will it stay there or go higher? This is the most movement and the highest since 1978. The real meaning is what is going to happen to the dollar? We donít need another18% inflation as it was under Jimmy the home builder. Gold moving up is an indicator that our money is going to run into inflation which we donít need. Gold went as high as $800.00 an ounce some years ago but donít look for that price soon. And with oil going up and it finally seems to have hit a plateau around $58. What bothers me the most is that our Las Vegas economy seems to be dancing to its own music and that may not be as well reported as we would like it to be. I wouldnít be surprised to see that our inflation rate is much more than almost any community in the US. Our utility bills along with the cost of medicine surely are not a welcome thing to be faced with this winter and then with the heat next summer so it will make us think twice about how much expendable money we have to live on. As for gold I look at it more as a weather vane of inflation than as something to consider as a good investment now.

POLICE GO TO ARBITRATION, TO BAD AND MORE
The Sheriff just doesnít seem to get it that a little less now is better in the long run. The longer this pay issue is dragged out the more disgruntled our police will become. Isnít it better to get the issue out of the way and back to work rather than talking about it all of the time? Sheriff lets get this thing settled before Christmas they can use the back pay.

By the way did you see the issue of the police killing each other when an off duty cop sees a crime being committed and intercedes then if the police are called they sometimes do not realized an off duty police already is helping. And because there is no uniform there ends up a killing of the off duty police by mistake. Now some states are looking into the possibility of disarming off duty police because too many of their own are being killed. I think it is interesting that they want to disarm off duty police because they are killing each other. I donít hear concern about off duty police killing civilians by mistake.

DECEMBER 7TH REMEMBERED ONCE MORE
It comes once more and 64 years later there are fewer of us to remember that event. In my case it was being laid off the Friday before the seventh and being with a friend that Sunday unexpectedly not knowing all that was going to change in my life. I would not trade that experience for anything but many would not want to go through that again. So letís just look to the west and pray that no such thing ever happens again.
HERE IS WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR FROM YOUR NEVADA SENIORS COALITION PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS; KEN MAHAL, VERN PERRY, FLORENCE PETRIS, BELLE CHOHANIN, KNIGHT ALLEN AND RICHARD THOMAS.
