Happy, (or sad) Post Election Time.
This is being written prior to the election.  I know Vern would be willing to hold the Foghorn if I wanted to rush a post-election column but I don't want to.  There will be plenty of time for Monday morning quarterbacking in the months to come.

There was an interesting article in the RJ on November 4, 2016. "Nevada can't find escort services to assess taxes." Can't find?
According to the article, Clark County has about 50 escort businesses on file, "but the addresses either don't exist or go to nothing but a room with a telephone." According to the bean counters this, failure to find, is costing the state budget $20 million. This all revolves around the live entertainment tax which was modified by the 2015 legislature and expanded to cover escort services. It's been in effect since 10/1/2015. It's been a year and the state is no closer to finding these businesses now than they were a year ago.

While this article must give you a hollow laugh, (how could it not), that twenty-million-dollar figure did intrigue me. Can you imagine what kind of revenue could be generated by having the live entertainment tax applied to every Raiders game and NHL game? I'd be willing to wager it makes the $20 million look like a kid's lemonade stand. There's just one itsy, bitsy, teeny weenie little problem: Professional sports are exempt from the tax. Another glorious victory for crony capitalism and the corporate welfare queens.

It's standard operating procedure. It's the same pattern over and over again: Tesla, Faraday Future, Switch, Microsoft, Apple and dozens of nameless others. The capitalists get the gold, the workers get the crumbs and the people get the shaft.

It has been my conviction for a long time that we live in this Louie XVI, "let them eat cake" environment because our political leadership is totally disconnected from the people. This was brought home to me in stark fashion by Jane Ann Morrison's column in the Las Vegas Review Journal on 10/6/2016. It was about Councilman Ricky Barlow's troubles with the law but that wasn't what got my attention. Jane Ann mentioned that Mr. Barlow joined the Council in 2007 at a salary of $45,410 and that he now has a salary of $75,000, Let's see if I can get YOUR attention:

Subject: Compensation - Year end 2007 to Year end 2015:
Las Vegas City Council 45,410 to 75,000 +65%
       Source: Ms. Morrison's column
Clark County Private Sector 41,399 to 43,732 +5.6%
Source: NV. Employment Dept. Research & Analysis
The average local government wage in Clark County rose 12%.

Get the picture? This is the world we live in. Privileged governments serving crony capitalists at the expense of everyone else.

Cheers for the Cubs and Indians. They put on a great World Series. It was fun to watch right
down to the final out. Maybe next year the Indians will break their drought.
