Happy, (or sad) Post Election
There was an interesting article in the RJ on November 4, 2016. "Nevada can't find escort services to assess taxes." Can't find?
While this article must give you a hollow laugh, (how could it not), that twenty-million-dollar figure did intrigue me. Can you imagine what kind of revenue could be generated by having the live entertainment tax applied to every Raiders game and NHL game? I'd be willing to wager it makes the $20 million look like a kid's lemonade stand. There's just one itsy, bitsy, teeny weenie little problem: Professional sports are exempt from the tax. Another glorious victory for crony capitalism and the corporate welfare queens.
It's standard operating procedure. It's the same pattern over and over again: Tesla, Faraday Future, Switch, Microsoft, Apple and dozens of nameless others. The capitalists get the gold, the workers get the crumbs and the people get the shaft.
It has been my conviction for a long time that we live in this Louie XVI, "let them eat cake" environment because our political leadership is totally disconnected from the people. This was brought home to me in stark fashion by Jane Ann Morrison's column in the Las Vegas Review Journal on 10/6/2016. It was about Councilman Ricky Barlow's troubles with the law but that wasn't what got my attention. Jane Ann mentioned that Mr. Barlow joined the Council in 2007 at a salary of $45,410 and that he now has a salary of $75,000, Let's see if I can get YOUR attention:
