No, No, Thirteen Times No!!!
by Ken Mahal, NSC President
Originally published on  October 14, 2004 - reprinted with permission

The November ballot will have page after page of gobbledygook that will attempt to convince us to vote in favor of the 13 questions presented. I read all of the issue statements and decided my vote then read the “argument against passage” portion and my “NO” vote still seems to be the right answer. The first 7 questions would require amending the Nevada Constitution. This is something so serious that in 99 out of 100 cases should never be considered.
Question NO. 1 is “should funding for education come before all else”? This is Congressman Jim Gibbons hair-brained politically driven idea that needs to be put to bed with an over whelming “NO” The point being that there is no oversight now on their multi-billions budget. Upon review, we found in their last 50+ line item budget they could cut $400,000,000 a biennium without touching one child’s program and we even suggested adding $5 million for supplies etc.
Question NO. 2 “is should schools by 2012 be funded to the national level”? This is a school teachers union driven issue that would do an even a better job of filling their retirement pockets to overflowing. Let’s do something meaningful, just go to 12 month schools for all grades and save 25% in classroom needs, saving a few billion and more importantly give teachers a 25% pay increase with 12 month contracts. We could also modularize school construction saving 30% in both time and cost. Just vote “NO”
Question NO. 3is about medical malpractice, fees, caps and etc.” The present cap is taken from a 30 year old out of date California law and this bill makes it all worse. Again just vote “NO”.
Question NO. 4is about insurance rate roll backs” this pie in the sky and has already been declared unconstitutional by federal courts. Just vote “NO”
For lack of space we say vote “NO” on questions 5 through 8.
Question NO. 9 “is Sheriff Young’s half percent sales tax grab” This would be the most egregious tax grab of the lot. It would be a ¼ % sales tax in 2005 and another ¼ % in 2009. What is wrong with the present system where Clark County and the city of Las Vegas approve the Metro budget? It is a good control so let’s keep it. Sheriff Young keeps pounding
away at our low national average of cops while forgetting that 80 to 90 % of our homes are in gated communities which blows his argument. So just vote “NO”.
Also, just vote “NO” for questions 10 through 13
FOLKS JUST VOTE WITH YOUR MIND IN GEAR USING COMMON SENSE.

CONTROLLER KATHY AUGUSTINE WANTS HER DAY IN COURT.

I ask you does it make sense for our Governor Kenny Guinn to call a special session of the legislature some time in November after the election to impeach Kathy Augustine in particular after we and many others requested that the Governor call a special session to cap our real-estate taxes before we are killed by them in the spring of 2005? His response was “wait until the regular session begins in February”. I think most of us would feel that capping our taxes is of a higher priority than cashiering Kathy out of the Controllers office. And if the Governor wants a special session why not then include our request to cap our real-estate taxes at say 6% or CPI which ever is less along with the Kathy Augustine issue? I bet most of us would think that made pretty good sense but then in government can anything make sense?
OK Governor go for it and do both, the Kathy Augustine impeachment along with capping our real-estate taxes at 6% or CPI whichever is less. We’d love you for that.

THE LAS VEGAS MONORAIL IS A $640,000,000 BUST & A BOONDOGLE.

The Monkey rail is a bust, that is busted most of the time and we wonder how does its behind the scene major pusher Commissioner Bruce Woodbury feel about it now? He is the prime mover along with the now demised Bob Broadbent. Between the two of them they manipulated the whole scene including moving Bob Snow from the airport to head up the RTC bus system and pushing the then Director Kurt Weinrich P.E. into oblivion. That is one of the most brutal actions I have seen taken right out in the open and no one ever questioned that action. If you have ever watched Mr. Snow like in snow job, it would be laughable if it wasn’t such a travesty of justice. We don’t wish these birds at the monkey rail any bad luck but the longer it stays derailed the less likely it will be another boondoggle that was to be extended to downtown, to Cashman Center and on the other end go to the airport. And yes at the expense of we tax payers as usual. Commissioner Woodbury has been at the top or bottom of most of the big billions spent in this valley of dust and dirty diesel fumes and still is loved by his constituents.
Stay tuned there are rumblings taking place that may be opening up a can of worms t hat the high-and-mighty will have there hands full.

THE WATER AUTHORITY IS OUT TO SPEND BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS

Have you seen the two pronged approach taking a couple billion to go south with a pipe to supposedly haul our treated poop past Hoover Dam and dump it into the Colorado River. They are conveniently forgetting to talk about the 1600 square miles of surface drainage that takes place in this valley when it rains and the hundreds of thousands of acre feet of polluted water that carries everything imaginable untreated right by our fresh water pumping intakes. Oh I know that will be another project like a big ditch similar to the Panama Canal to carry that runoff beyond the fresh water intakes. Oh well more work for our friends from wherever. Then to the north they are going on a water grab like none heard of in the west in recent year. I tell you folks it gets more interesting every day one lives and by the way more expensive because none of these multi billions of debt will be put on the back of the developers who will reap the big bucks building more and more headaches called progress. If you think prescription drugs are a big expense wait until Mulroy and her pals send us the bill for the above.
TELL ME WHY THE DRIVE TO GROW SO MUCH WHEN WE NEVER RAISE THE QUALITY OF JOBS ABOVE IMPORTED COMMON LABOR, THE SAND, GRAVEL, DUST, DIRTY DIESEL, CONCRETE AND WOOD BUSINESSES?
